How to choose a marketing agency

A plain-English checklist for hiring a marketing, SEO or web design agency: what to ask, red flags and what you should always own.

Most business owners hire a marketing agency the same way they pick a restaurant on a road trip: a quick search, a good-looking website, a friendly call. Then six months later they're wondering where the money went. Here's how to choose better.

Start with what you actually need

"Marketing" covers a lot. Before you call anyone, decide which problem you're solving:

  • Nobody can find you. You need SEO, AI search optimization and a complete Google Business Profile.
  • People find you but don't call. You need a better website and conversion work.
  • You need leads this month. You need paid ads (Google Ads, Facebook, retargeting), tracked to real calls.

Five questions to ask every agency

  1. Who will actually do the work? Some agencies sell you and hand you to a junior or an overseas contractor.
  2. How will I see results? You want calls, forms and sales, not just "impressions."
  3. Do I own my website, domain and ad accounts? The answer should be yes. If you leave, your history leaves with you.
  4. What happens in month one? A real plan beats a vague promise.
  5. Can I talk to a current client? Good agencies don't hesitate.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 spot. Anyone who does is guessing or gaming.
  • Long contracts with no exit. Confident agencies earn the renewal.
  • They own your stuff. If the agency registers your domain in its own name, walk away.

What it should cost

Prices vary with scope. A small local SEO program costs far less than a statewide ad campaign. Websites range from DIY builders at a few dollars a month to custom builds. See our website cost guide for real numbers.

Common questions

Can a marketing agency guarantee first-page rankings?

No. No one can honestly guarantee a ranking in Google or a mention in an AI answer, because the algorithms change constantly.

Should I own my website and ad accounts?

Yes. Your domain, website and ad accounts should be in your business name, so you keep them if you change agencies.

Still comparing agencies?

Run a free 60-second checkup on your listing and website first. You'll know exactly what's missing before you talk to anyone.
