Secretary of State business search: look up any US business
How to look up an LLC, corporation, nonprofit or public company in any state, which official database to use, and a link to every state's business entity search.
To look up a US business, search the business entity database of the state where it was formed, usually run by the Secretary of State. It shows status, registered agent and filings. Use the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search for nonprofits, SEC EDGAR for public companies, and the state or local licensing board for contractors. To find a phone number or address, use a directory.
Updated October 2026There is no national business registry
The United States has no single federal list of companies. LLCs, corporations and limited partnerships are created under state law, so each state keeps its own records. Most states run them through the Secretary of State. A few use another agency: Arizona's Corporation Commission, New Jersey's Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services, Virginia's State Corporation Commission, Maryland's Department of Assessments and Taxation, Michigan's LARA, and Wisconsin's Department of Financial Institutions.
That means a good business lookup starts with one question: which state? Search the state where the business operates first. If nothing turns up, try Delaware, Nevada and Wyoming, where many companies form even when they work elsewhere. A company formed in another state must also register as a "foreign" entity in each state where it does business, so it often appears in more than one database.
Pick the right tool for what you need
Is it a real, registered company?
Use the state business entity search in the table below. It shows legal name, entity type, formation date, status, registered agent and filed documents.
Is the nonprofit tax-exempt?
Use the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS). It shows whether donations are deductible, Form 990 filings, determination letters and organizations that lost exemption for not filing.
Is it a public company?
Use SEC EDGAR company search or full-text search for annual reports, quarterly reports, ownership filings and risk disclosures.
Is the contractor licensed?
Check the state licensing board, and the city or county for trades licensed locally. Our contractor license lookup guide lists where to search.
How do I reach the business?
Use a directory. USA Business Search lists businesses by state, city and category with phone numbers, websites and addresses.
What do customers say?
Search the Better Business Bureau for complaints and responses, and read reviews on more than one site. BBB accreditation is a paid membership, not a government license.
How to run a business entity search
- Search a distinctive word, not the full legal name. "Summit" finds "Summit Roofing LLC" and "Summit Roofing & Exteriors, Inc."
- Try the registered agent or officer search if the state offers one. It shows every company tied to the same person.
- Read the status carefully. "Active" or "Good Standing" means filings are current. "Forfeited," "Suspended," "Administratively Dissolved" or "Revoked" means the company missed a report, fee or tax.
- Open the filed documents. Annual reports often list officers or managers. Many states do not list LLC owners at all.
- Check DBAs separately. Trade names are filed with the state in some places and with the county in others. Our state guides explain which.
Good standing only means the paperwork is current. No state registry rates quality, confirms a license or endorses a business.
EIN, DUNS and NAICS lookups
An LLC lookup won't show tax or credit IDs. The IRS does not offer a public EIN search; it discloses an EIN only to people authorized for that business. Our separate guides cover each ID: EIN lookup, DUNS number lookup and NAICS code lookup.
State business lookup guides
These guides cover the official registry, DBA rules, licensing boards and formation costs for each state:

Business lookup FAQs
Is there a national LLC lookup?
No. LLCs are formed under state law, so you search the state where the LLC was formed or registered. Try the state where it operates first, then Delaware, Nevada and Wyoming.
Is a Secretary of State business search free?
In almost every state, yes. Texas charges $1 per Secretary of State search, though its Comptroller search is free. Delaware, New Jersey and Oklahoma charge for detailed status information. Certificates of good standing usually cost a fee.
How do I find out who owns an LLC?
Read the state record and its filed documents for managers, officers, organizers and the registered agent. Many states don't require LLC owners to be listed publicly, so the owner may not appear.
Can I look up a business by EIN?
Not through the IRS, which has no public EIN search. Some state databases, such as Florida's Sunbiz and the Texas Comptroller, let you search by federal ID. For nonprofits, IRS TEOS searches by EIN.
How do I check if a business is legitimate?
Confirm it is registered and active with the state, confirm any required license, search the BBB and court records, and make sure the address and phone match what the business gives you.
